Cosmetic dentistry describes a set of techniques and procedures used to enhance a person’s teeth, smile and ultimately confidence. The veneering procedure is usually done over two visits to the dentist with “temporary” veneers being fitted between visits. Veneering is often chosen as the treatment of choice by acting professionals and those in the media spotlight as dramatic results can be achieved quite quickly and cost-effectively.

Implants

A dental tooth implant made of titanium is surgically placed permanently into the jawbone of missing teeth. It is designed to act as tooth root to hold on to any artificial tooth, crown, bridge or denture.

Dental Crowns

Crowns are protective covers, made from porcelain or ceramic which fit over the existing tooth to mask defects e.g. cracks and discolouration. Initially, the tooth is shaped to receive the crown with the patient under local anesthetic. An impression of the tooth is then taken and used by the dental laboratory to create the colour-matched crown.

During the manufacturing process, the patient will be fitted with temporary crowns, typically for around two to three weeks. On the second visit to the dentist, the crowns are bonded into place. The badly chipped, broken or decayed tooth is capped or crowned with acrylic or porcelain fused with metal. It covers the tooth so that it can stand biting pressure without further damage.

Bonding

Mild scraping of original tooth enamel can reshape front teeth. Then tooth-colored composite plastic enamel of the desired shape is bonded on the original tooth. This is hardened and polished with a special light to give you a winning smile.

Shaping

Enamel shaping is the process of reshaping teeth with filing or removing some enamel for immediate, painless teeth correction.

Dental Orthodontics

This is a specialized branch of dentistry that deals with moving or realigning teeth to improve appearance. This usually involves the wearing of an appliance or “brace” which gently applies pressure to the teeth to move them to the correct position.

Orthodontics is often performed in the teenage years as the mouth and jaw develop but more adults are choosing this option to realign their teeth – however, the process can take longer for an adult. It is best for crooked or buck teeth and can be done on children and adults alike. Invisible lingual braces are inserted behind teeth to straighten them and also to correct bite-related problems.

Titanium is usually used as the anchor rod because it integrates well with the surrounding bone and tissue with only a very minor risk of rejection. Full mouth reconstructions often employ multiple tooth implants in conjunction with other techniques e.g. bonding.

Dental Bridges

Where a tooth has been lost, a dental bridge can be used to “bridge” the gap between the two remaining adjacent teeth. A bespoke structure is formed in the dental laboratory incorporating a hollow crown to support the missing tooth. This bridge structure is then bonded to the adjacent teeth, neatly filling the gap from where the original tooth was lost.

Similarly to crowns and veneers, the replacement bridge tooth will be colour matched to the rest of the teeth. Bridging is popular because it is usually a permanent solution and is less invasive than implantology. It is also less bulky than an equivalent denture.

Damage: How to Hydrate

a. More than three-quarters of women (76 percent) think their hair is at least somewhat damaged.

b. Deep conditioning is an important part of keeping hair healthy, but many women ignore the telltale signs that their locks are in need of such attention. Roughness, dryness, brittleness, and frizz are just some of the symptoms of dry hair that signal the need for extra care.

Styling: Ride the Waves

The skin is the largest organ of the body and is significantly affected by the aging process. Estrogen receptors have been detected on the cellular components of the skin and lower levels of estrogen influence the skin-cell metabolism. Changes in skin collagen lead to diminished elasticity and skin strength.

There is a distinct reduction in collagen production after menopause. Changes in vascularity are found following menopause. Dermal blood flow decreases significantly in postmenopausal women. Repair functions in skin are regulated by a group of chemicals called “cytokines”.

Included in these are epidermal cell growth factor (ECGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), and angiogenesis factor. AF stimulates the rebuilding of the microvascular system within the skin. TGF and ECGF stimulate rapid cell proliferation for the replacement of dead or damaged cells.

Risks of UV Damage To Skin

Excessive exposure to UV rays causes oxidation of the collagen and elastin fibers in this skin. This, in turn, causes ‘crosslinking’. Cross-linking causes the collagen in the skin to become tangled and stiffen. This results in sagging and loss of skin elasticity, and allow facial expressions to put deep lines and wrinkles in the skin.

Some of these UV damage can be prevented by the use of sunscreens and sunblocks. Some of this damage can be reversed by the use of ‘peels’ – where the outer layer of the skin is removed by the use of mild acidic formulas, which removes the damaged layers and stimulates the production of a stronger, thicker layer of skin.

Free radicals are molecules created by oxidative chemical reactions within the body. These free radicals damage cellular DNA and cause mutations of the skin cells. Free radical damage can be prevented by the use of anti-oxidants, both internally and topically. Antioxidants attract and bind these free radical molecules, rendering them harmless.

Nutrients That Protect Your Skin

Premature skin aging can be avoided by preventing excess exposure to sunlight and pollutants, as well as providing skin with the nutrients it needs to repair itself.

Zinc

Topical applications of 5% vitamin C cream is an effective treatment, clinically shown to improve photodamaged skin.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D has been shown to reverse skin damage, increase wound healing. Vitamin D is produced in the body in response to sunlight and has been shown to have a beneficial effect on skin repair and hair growth. Vitamin D rarely requires supplementation, and 15 minutes of daily low-sun exposure should stimulate adequate production of this hormone-like vitamin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant. Experiments show that it may protect against the degradation of collagen, and prevent skin damage by environmental insult and aging.

CoQ10 (Ubiquinone)

Internal and topical application of CoQ10 has a beneficial effect on preventing photoaging. CoQ10 penetrates into the viable layers of the epidermis and reduces the level of oxidation. Reduction in wrinkle depth following the CoQ10 application has also been shown in clinical trials. CoQ10 prevents oxidative DNA damage and suppresses the degradation of collagen.
